December 22, 2022 - Classic Mendo Pinot. Earthy, well balanced wine from a great winemaker.

January 31, 2022 - Phillips Hill; 1/1/2020-1/31/2022: Transparent ruby. A: full of berry fruit and spice on the nose. Mixture of slight baking spice with more woodsy earthy notes. F: lush and concentrated red fruit, more repeats of the spice here and a long, satisfying, bright finish.

Opened this early on as the cork had pushed up a bit (cold weather? Random?). Either way the wine was sound and delicious if a bit young.

December 12, 2021 - Glass before dinner at my sister’s. PnP. On the nose and palate, reserved notes of semi-sweet and tart red fruit (cherries, cranberries, currants) with a note of blackberries, earthy minerality with perhaps a slight ferrous note, forest floor and ground (non-baking) spice. Medium garnet, light to medium bodied, light legs. Medium+ tannins and acidity, no heat. Medium complexity, light to medium persistence, medium+ intensity. I like PH, and my preferences in Pinots run toward those from across the pond—which is the PH house style, at least by CA standards—but on this night, particularly without air or food, this was pretty tight and reticent. Interesting reading CPS’s note for the ‘18 and don’t know if the vintage had a different profile, the extra year made a difference or just different tastes. Not sure what’s ultimately here, but these guys have a good record with interesting, nervy wines, so I think there’s potential, but if drinking anytime soon, give it air, air and more air, and preferably, don’t drink it as a cocktail wine.
