September 26, 2000 - Tuesday, September 26, 2000 A very inviting bright garnet color which is surprising for a Virginia vintage of this age. This is a very respected vineyard but it’s Cab. Franc vines were young at this harvest. Another surprise on the nose: green olives. But also violets chimed in. As the wine opened about 20 minutes after decanting, notes of raspberry and rosemary joined the bouquet. On the palate the wine was disappointingly light, lacking the mouthfeel of a well developed cab franc. But it has loads of flavor: fruit and raspberry on the front which is sustained as the wine gives way to flavors of rosemary (wife says lavender) roasted beef and berries. Tannins have softened but the acidity is still high. With marinated London broil and mushroom, leek and rosemary sauce along with sweet potatoes, baked apples (and yes, I know the latter are not good accompaniments for this wine.)
