March 18, 2012 - Recovering from a cold so take that into consideration. However this bottle, while not more complex than my last seemed a bit more balanced and enjoyable. Fruit driven, this was perfect for the the palate impaired.

February 3, 2011 - Lively dark fruit and smooth mouthfeel. A little over the top and without complexity. Chalky tannins and a little spice on the finish. ($15)

December 28, 2010 - Pleasantly light for a shiraz. Quite mineral, with good acidity, a bit of blackberry, some tar. Good by itself or with bratwursts.

8/15/2008 (link)(EIGHT UNCLES Fox Gordon) Uncles Dear Friends, I apologize to everyone that tried to order the Fox Gordon "By George" yesterday - when I found out the wine wasn't going to be here for a year, I pulled the offer (we will re-offer it next summer, at the same price, but I wasn't going to take your money a year in advance for something that was knowingly delayed - that's just wrong. Of course, delays happen all the time but if we know about in advance, we're not going to move ahead with an offer. We may make you wait for your wine but we would never do it knowingly!) That brings us to today... Considering the release schedule snafu, we've been offered this - the 2005 Eight Uncles Shiraz for a price that is more than a little silly (basically half price - I think this qualifies as a Friday Special). Crafted by Tash Mooney (E & E Black Pepper) as her hobby project, the Eight Uncles is very popular in Australia and it is not thought of as an everyday wine (see how many listings there are for the 2006 - the 2005 is long gone from retail). Considering the demand for it Down Under, this is quite a nice gesture. For the US consumer, this makes for the perfect everyday wine - nothing pretentious or overdone - just a well mannered wine that can be pulled for any occasion without guilt or pretense. From three parcels in the Barossa that Mooney keeps secret, this wine is known for delivering two things - value and restraint: Matthew Jukes: "Tash Mooney is on fire (not literally, we hope, of course!) right now. Eight Uncles is a tremendous wine and one that has thousands of fans in the UK as well as Australia. The spicy, savoury, coffee-imbued oak cradles the fresh red and black fruit, and the result is a staggeringly serious wine. It doesn't dare step over the mark into the heady portiness which is still celebrated by our delightful North American chums, but holds itself upright with devastating deportment. You can get to the end of a bottle unscathed, too! Now that's gotta be the main aim, surely? It's from $45 to $57 everywhere else, so you know what you need to do!" As I said yesterday with the "By George", this has office party or wedding written all over it. Another crazy buy this week on a wine that is not easy to find in the US: 2005 Fox Gordon Shiraz "Eight Uncles" (Winewise/Gold)(WBM94) (if we run out, the state of Pennsylvania received some at about the same price) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Aus7850
