Community Tasting Notes 4

April 7, 2023 - Classic aromas of Chablis on the nose mixed with a sensation of the ripeness to come. The breadth of a true premier cru on the palate - really textured. Citrus and minimality but these flavors sit behind notes of more tropical fruits - melon and orchard fruits - that I associate with warmer climates than is customary in the Yonne. The warmth of the vintage is on display here. Length as befits a top premier cru. My issue is not so much with this wine in particular, as with how some wines from these warmer years simply do not seem to me to be Chablis. They are fine wines - truly - but they do not show the characteristics I identify with Chablis. How much you like it depends on how important it is to you that a wine identifying as Chablis tastes like you expect a Chablis to taste. Some wines in 2019 and 2020 manage to maintain that identity. Some, as this in my view, cross over that line. But intrinsically - based solely on what is in the glass - this is unquestionably a fine and enjoyable wine, perhaps exceptionally so for the price.

November 7, 2022 - NW 2022 Xmas Roadshow (UK): A more complex nose with subtle notes of apple slices, toast and minerals. Dry, and mid-bodied with a nice creamy mid-palate, the wine is dry and focussed with nice fruit filling but lacks a bit of vibrancy. However, still enjoyable with a reasonable length.

September 30, 2022 - 2020 Chablis, Mostly Premier Crus (Dig Wines, San Francisco): Very similar to the VV in its richness and orchard fruit, but a little deeper. Outstanding texture that isn't too dependent upon wood.

February 14, 2022 - Has a fresh nose of lemon, flint, hay and salt. The palate has good generosity of flavour, but is contained. it has a smoky mineral component and a suggestion of honeysuckle. The finish is sappy, laden with chalk and persistent. Lovely now with enough in the tank to develop over the mid-term.
