July 2, 2023 - This bottle of 2020 Courbis Saint-Joseph was opened in advance but unsure of how long prior; likely before service or even the day before. The wine pours a violet color with a translucent core. Medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, deep, dark candied black fruits with purple flowers, coffee, milk chocolate and baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium(+) tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes on the nose with a bit of black pepper on the finish…which is long. While this isn’t a showstopper, it is good and serves as a reminder that these wines from Domaine Courbis shouldn’t be slept on. Great value. Drink now with some patience and should drink well through 2030.
