September 21, 2023 - The Ornato undergoes 30-day maceration in stainless steel with the majority of the wine aged in large oak botte with a small proportion spending 12 months in barrique (not sure if any of it is new). The 2018 Ornato came across as fairly approachable (perhaps because of the touch of barrique-influenced wine) with some slickness and polish, but it is not oaky (tasted no oak at all), internationally-styled chocolate milk shake either. This is identifiably Nebbiolo that shows real Serralunga character: a tannic, dark-fruited, and brooding wine that is taut and precise.

July 26, 2023 - Treacle, truffle and smoked bacon /lardo. Bit of black pepper. Thick and tannic but lofty and fragrant. Young but poised and tightly coiled and ready to explode. Velvety and very rich. Phenomenal. Open again in a decade!

October 25, 2021 - I have tasted quite a number of 2018 Barolos already and this is clearly one of the most impressive ones I can recall. The 2018 Ornato shows typically masculine, forceful & broad shouldered. Its character, in 2018, presents an utterly pure and seductive wine. The Serralunga pedigree shines through loud and clear, but the typical tannic spine feels more airy & gentle, the muscles more lean & sinewy, the potency more lithe and the broad aromatical core barer. The 2018 displays clearly what the beauty and prestige of Ornato is all about; In my opinion, like other wines from grand Serralunga sites, the 2018 vintage gave them less of a “shell”, which in more classic, brooding vintages forbids such a pure expression, when the wines are very young. Freshly cut blackberry, plums, lavender, sage, hard licorice candy, cherry liqueur, elderberry and iron show up in a layered, pretty voluminous setting. A scent of blue flowers is omnipresent and very beguiling until the elegant finish. Aged for appr. 30 months in cask (French and Slavonian oak) and a small part in barriques. What can I say, the 2018 Ornato is a drop-dead gorgeous wine, I loved it.
