November 4, 2017 - This wine is showing incredibly well tonight, spaghetti night. Age seems to have done nothing but improve every aspect of this, and it is screaming balanced, full of complexity, and showing not one iota of tiredness, oxidation, or dulling through the front-to-back, full experience. I've had a few of these now over the past decade, and the '02 was always preferred to this '03. I believe this was largely owing to the heavy, mouth drying tannins in the '03, but those while still quite present have integrated now, allowing other flavors to come to the fore -- cranberry, pomegranate, lilac - I will not list them all. The finish is keen and complex, a dance between the fruit, acid, and remaining tannins.

May 23, 2011 - This has a floral nose that's very much in keeping with the season's outside scents of late, easy to compare having just taken an evening run through the local realm. Raw honey on top and red cherry fruit with an earthiness behind; this all very much parallels the bouquet on the ’02, which first captivated me. Medium bodied with a smooth and squeaky feel up front that just clamps down “DRY” like a beaver-trap once it reaches the final mile. This has a big dose of SWEET, semi-sour red-fruited cherries that give way almost entirely to dry earth and crushed pits on the medium-length finish. This wine seems very focused and specific (knowing exactly what it wants to be). It does not bewilder or mutate off course. It’s just the thing for so many food dishes. It is very tannic, yet not too bitter or unpleasant for the roughness. It’s probably not going to improve much, nor will it decline in the next five years.

May 4, 2011 - Nose: mushroom and dark fruits. Palate: tightly closed even after 1 hour of decanting. Firm tannins, medium-dry with too much heat. Needs another couple of years in the bottle.
