    May 29, 2023 - Cotarella, Ferentano, 2018

Particularly for the kosher wine drinker, the ability to taste a wine from a new spot in the world is exciting. It is an even greater experience to be able to taste an autochthonous variety.

Roscetto is an exceedingly rare white variety grown not only in a single place, but by a single producer, the Cotarella family of Montefiascone, a town in Lazio, central Italy, about 100 km from Rome.

Famiglia Cotarella was founded by winemaker brothers, Riccardo and Renzo Cotarella, in 1979. They set out with the goal of rediscovering the ancient vineyards and indigenous grapes of their microclimate, some thought extinct.

Roscetto was one such variety. Via DNA study, Roscetto was found to be a descendant of Greco. Beginning with the 1998 harvest, Cotarella produced their first Roscetto, calling it Ferentano, a name taken from the archaeological site of Ferento, the ancient Etruscan town located near the vineyards.

The first kosher production was 2005 and via wine négociant, Ralph Madeb, we now have this 2018.

Cotarella also produces the great Merlot, Falesco Montiano, with its 1st vintage in 1993, and 1st kosher vintage in 2005. By 1999, Cotarella bought the Marciliano farm and began producing wonderful Cab-based wines under that name.

A 3rd generation sits at the helm of the family winery, and the name Cotarella represents the flagship wines. The winery is located in a hilly region between Umbria and Lazio, and the soil is volcanic and sedimentary.

This wine is special, and not only in its rarity. 100% Roscetto, grown in Montefiascone, 300m above sea level, on spur cordoned vines, cryomaceration for 8 hours at 8C, fermented first in steel vats, then undergoing MLF and aged in barriques 4 months, followed by bottle aging. 2.5 gr/lt res. sugar.

Golden yellow in the glass, an opulent nose of pineapple, citrus, jasmine, honeycomb, vanilla. The palate shows serious heft, with beautiful waves of fruit and floral notes, a medium(+) body, high acidity that is tempered by some residual sugar. Incredible wine, what a treat!

    $45, 12.5%ABV, non-mevushal

May 20, 2023 - Delightful, complex and nuanced. Really showing well. white flowers, grapefruit pith, yellow plums, balanced vanilla, lemon merengue, macadamia nuts, etrog, something toasty. Will try and get more!

June 7, 2022 - What a drinking experience. The nose and mouth at opening were highly aligned with strong notes of citrus and minerals and a vanilla note in the background. The wine had a medium body which coated the mouth in the most perfect fashion. After a few hours the citrus and minerals retreated leaving the vanilla and some nuttiness upfront. Great wine!

April 22, 2021 - Famiglia Cotarella, Ferentano, Lazio IGT, 2018: Falesco made a kosher run of this wine before, in 2005. Unfortunately I never got to taste it. This wine is made of a very rare grape variety named Roscetto, which is indigenous to Italy. In fact, only Ricardo Cotarella produces a varietal wine with this variety, and he is said to have solely saved it from extinction. Shiny gold, with green reflections, the nose on this wine shows notes of orange blossom, lime, ripe pear, white peach, mirabelle plum, with subtle waxy notes and hints of toasted oak. Medium-bodied, dry but not sharp, with great concentration on the palate, vibrant and a lush creamy texture, really nice viscosity, with notes of lime, juicy yellow plum, pear, apple, orange blossom water, medium-plus acidity, earthy minerals, with touches of lemon curd, almonds and honeycomb on the long and elegant finish. Truly a fascinating, highly complex white wine. 12.5% Abv. Drink now-2024, maybe longer. 92-93
