February 4, 2023 - Festa dal Barolo AM tasting

Balsam and red fruits. rose, violets, and tar. There is good sap, breadth and intensity without any heaviness. Structured and beautifully balanced with good soil notes. Finishes with cooling balsam notes. lovely balance. A really good '18.

February 4, 2023 - La Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): Dark and mineral in the glass, the 2018 Barolo Villero wafts up with notes of crushed stone and dusty dried roses. It’s soft and round on the palate with juicy acidity that motivates its tart red fruits. Nuances of licorice and a hint of dark chocolate linger, as this finishes with youthfully grippy Villero tannins and a bit dry. I'd prefer more balance from start to finish.

February 4, 2023 - La Festa del Barolo: Masterclass (and burgers) (The Pool/Grill): Another quite floral style of wine, some potpourri. Darker and brooding and while there is some freshness there there is also a clear request for more time. One of the new producers at Festa this year (and a visit we did a few years ago). Great family history of making wine.

February 4, 2023 - La Festa del Barolo 2023: The Fenocchio Villero is the darkest, spiciest wine I've tasted in 2018. I found dark red plum fruit, iron, dark baking spices, and orange peel on the nose. On the palate, it has above average tannic heft and depth for a 2018, with dark red plum and blueish fruit tones and spices. This is one where I may be underrating it, as it was hard to get a great read on it from a brief pour. I definitely like where Fenocchio is going over the past few vintages - the 2016s were really nice.

January 28, 2023 - La Festa del Barolo (Los Angeles) Grand Tasting (Marino Restaurant, Los Angeles): Light with delicious fruit, citrus, and spice. Beautiful for drinking now. One of the best 2018’s poured.
