January 28, 2024 - Great acidity throughout, med+ to high-. Light body of citrus. No significant reductive hints on the nose, not really giving off much floral character. Certainly a food wine.

February 24, 2023 - Has closed somewhat compared to last summer. Not a thing out of place, but not all that exciting right now.

My experience is that many of the more humble wines from the better producers go through a hard angular phase a few years after bottling, whereas Donnhoff go through a “elegant but somewhat neutral” phase.

Leave for a few years for more fireworks, though it’s pleasant if somewhat neutral right now.

July 25, 2022 - Tasted at the winery. Tasted together in a set consisting of the Kreuznacher Kahlenberg, Niederhauser and Schlossbockelheimer. Tasted after the entry trocken and Tonschiefer.

All three wines in this set were richer than the previous two and had more intense aromatics. All of course had the classic delicious zesty Donnhoff touch, where you take slate and green fruit and add a layer of pure drinkability and deliciousness without adding weight or lacking character.

Schlossbockelheimer was quite powerfully white and yellow fruited on the nose, tense and with considerable presence. Less green and sharp on the palate than the first two. More of a mineral bite, but well balanced.

Niederhauser was quite similar to the above, but slightly more “relaxed” and effortless. A little less mineral. A polished less edgy version of the Schlossbockelheimer, but not necessarily better.

Thr Kahlenberg 1ste lage was again clearly in the same family, but the nose was slightly sweeter and more towards the floral honeyed side of things. The palate somewhere between the other two.

All three wines in this set showed very similarly and comments should be read through that lens. 92+ points for all three with potential for more.

June 16, 2022 - Donnhoff Tasting (St. Paul): Orange peel, spice, floral, minerals and chalk. Short to medium finish and complex effort. Very nice wine.
