October 13, 2023 - Barbaresco vs. Barolo (Chicago, IL): #18-02, 9% abv. Kind of an odd Spätlese -- neither here nor there, really. Feels dilute, but also relatively high in alcohol, and comes off heavy-handed but also lacking the sweetness so it drinks like a Feinherb.

March 9, 2021 - My last of these, and really good. Remains Spatlese sweet with excellent balancing acidity. Ripe peach. Lightly baked apple with a touch of brown spices. Some creaminess that I associate with age, but I see my note from 2010 mentions it too. A perfect match with a shrimp scampi made a bit sweet with Mattei Cap Corse Blanc Quinquina Corsican vermouth.

May 12, 2019 - Fully mature, though showing a lot softer than I would expect from a 2001. A light gold colour with lots of apparent development - savoury smoky and lightly burnished notes around gentle peachy fruit, and comes across almost halbtrocken in terms of its sweetness.

September 17, 2017 - Chatham. Wonderful wine. In my sweet spot as far as maturity with plenty of fruit, lots of acidity to balance out the sugar that remains, just a touch of petrol, and a finish that went on and on.

2/28/2009 (link)(Josef Leitz Rudesheimer Berg Roseneck) The nose was lovely with petroleum notes along with some candied lemons, minerals and pear. The palate was a "wake up!" Riesling with juicy acidity, lovely elegant texture, and great depth. Classic 2001 in that the acidity was there, it was a true spatlese and it had just devastating length. It was so perfect and ready to drink right now. Yes, there was still some acidity that lent the wine a big structure bit on the nose and palate we already were in secondary land which meant to me this was rarin' to go and fully in it's drinking window. I will let my final bottle rest for three more years just for the sake of science as I would love to check out this wine when it hits tertiary land.

3/19/2003 (link)(Josef Leitz Rudesheimer Berg Roseneck Spatlese) Nose of lime blossoms, minerals, burnt orange rinds, kiwi, aloe. Very complex nose. Entry is silky, with beautiful floral elements, red fruits, lime zest on the finish and perfect balance. A sligh sweet green onion/celery thing on the finish. Perfectly integrated acids bring out even more fruit (tangerine) on the back end of the finish. Another brilliant 2001.
