Community Tasting Notes 4

November 11, 2023 - Cabernet Franc Global Smackdown (Canoehead Central): Part of a Global Smackdown tasting of Cabernet Franc wines. Double-decanted (min. one hour) and served blind. Brilliant garnet hue. Nose was a tad reserved at first with fruit hiding behind an alcohol fume curtain. Vegetal notes were picked up first by a few tasters and then the red and black fruit arose. There was also cigar box, dried herbs (de Provence?) and baking spice aromas. Big wine in the mouth – superb layers of fruit and savouries. Wonderful depth and complexity. One favourite vote and three 2nd places. Tied for second overall with the Painted Rock CF.

September 3, 2023 - Two hour decant. Deep dark magenta color. Black cherry, cinnamon, lavender, powdered sugar, orange rind, and subtle pistachio. Smooth, dry, somewhat full bodied palate. Some hatch peppers sneak in on the palate. Firm, full tannins on the longish finish.

As others have noted, this is a more unique, fruity CF than many people are used to. There remains a bit of the peppery character that purists love. For me, it’s exactly my style. Good balance.

April 21, 2023 - This is the hedonistic version of Cab Franc. Polar opposite of Chinon. There’s no greenness or leanness. This is waves of layered fruit, savouries and concentrated balance. Millimeters away from being jammy and flabby. Just enough acidity to lift the fruit and superfine tannins. Gulpable. You’ve been warned. If you open this while preparing dinner, you’ll need to pop a second one by the time you sit down. I could just smell the empty bowl as a pastime. Really well done. Thanks, Cameron.

September 3, 2022 - Napa Cab Afternoon (DV Central): The TUB* at the end of a Napa Cabs tasting - decanted ~30 mins
Possibly the best Cab Franc I've ever tasted. Dark garnet with crimson rim. There is a spiciness to the nose where Cab Franc has had the time to mature and lose its green pepper properties and become and savoury cherry and plum tart. Medium plus body and very well balanced. I expect acid in my CFs and this was in check with the generous fruit, alcohol and fine tannins. I want a case of this!
    * TUB = Totally Unnecessary Bottle
