Community Tasting Notes 30

January 30, 2024 - decanted and served around 45 minutes after opening. Very fragrant and floral nose, with leather and more meaty notes, still very much alive but vitality was not the same as our last bottle 3 years ago. Certainly more mellow now. Two hours after opening this was drinking beautifully and still going strong.

November 4, 2023 - Aside from a tattered label, the bottle was in great shape. No signs of seepage and <2 cm of ullage. Color was a vibrant light ruby moving towards an amber brown in the last 3 mm of the edge. The clarity was stunning and almost looked as if it was backlit. Poured without decanting, first 10 minutes had some mushroom, musk, but then things began to change, and buckets of fruit emerged from this 38 year-old. Cherries, other dark fruit, a touch of licorice along with the perfect balance of tertiaries. The palate was even more impressive. I would have guessed this bottle was a point to the second! Same fruit taste with background of some barely noticeable wood tones. Not a spec of tannin and even the acidity was reduced to the perfect level. It was a slightly viscous glass of magic. Despite the lack of tannins and acidity, a wonderful finish that lasted about 25 seconds. THIS is why we spend tens of thousands of dollars going through the Burgundy mine field that a 4-digit price could give you a bottle that was barely quaffable. It's the best shot you ever hit in golf, the best evening of your life. It is why we beat our heads repeating a costly experiment that almost never turns out well, and we invested a ton of money and time for naught. But when it connects, it is magical and without comparison. And you now know why the quote is true. If you lead a magnificent life you will have 100 outstanding bottles of wine, and they will all be Bordeaux, but you will have only 10 that are unforgettable, they will all be Burgundy. Perfection in a glass and very unexpected given the reviews and pedigree, but there it was!

July 10, 2021 - Burgundy Dinner with Friends (The Bristol - Chicago IL): Opened 2-3 hours before serving. Perfectly charming aged Burgundy with aged red cherry and berry sorbet roasted meat and cooked mushroom. Lots and lots of depth coming though and unfolding over two+ hours, this seemed older than 1985 at first (I might have thought 1978 or 1979 if served blind), but did not budge from that rich, mature, concentrated position, even after 2 hours. So enticing.

April 1, 2021 - lovely and fragrant nose, with bacon, leather, and toasty notes. Soooo floral and elegant. So clean and perfect.
