Community Tasting Notes 4

April 7, 2024 - Wrapping up a wild weekend, I finished this bottle of Cuchet-Beliando Cornas that I opened Friday evening. It was awesome on the pop and pour and continued to develop in a lovely arc through Sunday evening when I enjoyed my last glass. The 2017 pours a deep ruby/purple with a magenta rim and what’s basically an opaque core. Medium+ viscosity and moderate staining, with some signs of sediment. ón the nose the wine is developing with notes of the most pure black and red brambles, some blueberries, a bit of animale, deli case, pimento loaf, lavender, a whole Pensey’s bag of Tellicherry pepper corns, black olives, cedar and gentle warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins and medium acid. Confirming the notes from the palate although the brambles are a bit more red. The finish is long and with loads of meat and black pepper. This is a stunning Cornas that has some real class behind the feral Cornas curtain. I really love this…but I’m an absolute sucker for the Rhône. Drink now with some patience but this will be brilliant for decades. 2024-2057.

December 19, 2022 - OMG - each new pour has a nose that makes me swoon - stunning nose of tiny berries - blue-purple-red, with a wonderful meat-game (not smokey though), hints of savory and brine, and a good hunk of stones and granite. The palate is superb - tons of flavor, not heavy, medium bodied with lively acid - and a great sweet-savory balance. There is juicy fresh berries along with a serious meaty and minerally aspect. Great grip all the way through and the finish is long and complex and urgent. After about 20-30 min in the glass this really clamped down hard and on day 2 the remains in the bottle were tight as well - the fruit had shut down but the savory and granite were still there. This is a powerhouse all the way through and given my experience I expect it to shut down hard and then reemerge in 15-20 years. Given that I caught the early drinking window, I'm rating it based on potential. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 18/20.

Day 5: just beautiful now. The nose has beautiful dark and somewhat sweet fruit: blueberry and blackberry, with hints of violets, granite, stones - the minerals give a distinctive salty-savory note wiht maybe just hints of olive. This is really potent with lots in reserve but it’s also so refined and balanced. The palate is more resolved and very much like the nose: full of flavor and intense but also refined and classic. Great depth and a combo of dark fruit with some dark florals and lots of savory granite-meat-brine notes. The finish is long and wide with excellent dark and mineral notes. Spectacular.

December 2, 2022 - Served blind. Initially I read this as big, with an aromatic that said ripe and bordering on higher alc for me. And it throws a decently dark color so I was wondering if this was domestic or N Rhone syrah. Light note of bacon fat and potpourri. Tar, iron, rocks and purple fruit. This is a well-built, kinda cerebral, kinda modern....very good wine.

November 5, 2022 - Pop and pour (!). For science? First and foremost, this is spectacularly drinkable. On the nose: stunning blackberry, blueberry, cola, pickled onion brine, but so primary. On the palate: blackberry, cola, spice, loads of cracked black pepper, but somehow only a suggestion of heat. Acidity is on point, but could show a touch more density. Mouth-filling chalky tannin on the juicy finish, showing loads of cola. Maybe not quite up to the level of the 15, but very, very good.
