Community Tasting Notes 6

January 3, 2014 - A medium gold color in the glass. On the nose a huge burst of crushed rocks on the nose, just a ton of minerals, along with white peach and lime. On the palate, this drinks like a Spatlese. The acid is quite restrained, and a bit surpassed by the creamy white peach and sweet honey. But there’s still a nice streak of minerals. Some spiced apple cider qualities on the finish. Good stuff, but the lower acid makes me wonder about aging this. Screw cap.

September 12, 2010 - Light golden. Not a ton on the nose, bit of petrol. Adequate acidity, but fatter and riper than the '07 Kabinetts we've been drinking recently. Apples and peaches, with some hints of oily petrol. Very nice.

July 12, 2009 - Wonderful concentration and extract for a Kabinett. Racy Mosel acidity. Delicious now but no hurry.

June 16, 2008 - Riesling Revival with Bear Dalton of Specs (French Alliance Houston): This bottle had a very loud dog pee component to the bouquet. Wow, it kind of turned off some folks. It did seem to blow off after a while. I liked it because it mixed with the intense petrol and apple smell. The palate was quite smooth and a little more dense than the previous bottles. Once again, there was a little effervescence present from young Germans. The finish was tasty with green apple and manderin oranges. One of my top wines of the night. At $20, a real buy in my book.

November 12, 2007 - Had with French lentils and sausage. Nose of cassis, penetrating slate/chalk, and lime. Palate is pretty tight with less lime and more cassis. Finish shows great subtlety, hinting at something better in the future. The 2006 vintage rears its head though as this wine is too ripe and (dare I say it) four-square, masking what should be supreme delicacy and subtlety on the palate. Unlike other 2006's I've had (albeit not many) though, this wine is not clumsy, just not perfect. It's not unbalanced, with just enough mouth-watering acidity. This wine will certainly last forever (Theise says 2029) and will improve as everything integrates. At $20, I think this is likely a wine to buy in some quantity, though I could believe the spaetlese is the real star.
