December 31, 2022 - Only 3,592 bottles were made. 85% Alicante Bouschet, 15% Syrah. The grapes come from Caliboro in the San Javier de Loncomilla sub-region of Maule. Dry-farmed. Native yeasts. Aged 16 months in oak. No filtering.

I like the nose which is in full expression of secondary notes and verging on tertiary notes. There’s cedar, tobacco and spice and a tiny bit of tart black berry fruit in the background. The problem is the palate is sort of in an awkward stage and not showing much. It especially lacks fruit. There’s a bit, but not much. Medium+ acid. The 14.5% alcohol is generally integrated. The palate just doesn’t show enough fruit to match the oak based secondary notes. There are some noticeable tannins without food, but fine with food. At almost 9 years of age, it’s not so abnormal for age worthy wines to be in this in-between stage, so perhaps it’ll improve. At the same, perhaps there wasn’t enough fruit to begin with which can be an issue of high-yielding Alicante Bouschet.
