  • Wisco Mel Likes this wine:

May 1, 2024 - Absolutely lovely California Pinot noir. On the lighter side (compared to a Pinot like Belle Glos), notes of black and blue fruit, dried herbs and a lovely, spicy earthiness.

March 7, 2024 - Solid California Pinot. Red fruits and smooth (few) tannins. Easy drinking while young and a very pleasant wine for the price.

  • Dionysusx Likes this wine: 94 points

February 20, 2024 - Smooth with touches of smoke, bitterness over floral, velvety body, yet with a wonderful balance of acidity. Raspberry and hints of cocoa along for the ride. Excellent.

    December 7, 2023 - Flowers in December

I’m guessing that unless you live in a more temperate climate, or do a lot of indoor gardening, you may not see many flowers during the month of December. Here in the Midwest, it’s almost unheard of; again, short of an indoor garden, which this person couldn’t attend to as I’ve told those around me that I can kill plastic plants.

Let me focus on a flower you can enjoy in December, and even here in the Midwest; it’s today’s wine, the

Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2021

Flowers is one of those iconic wineries that just about any wine drinker knows, even if they haven’t had the wines, much like yours truly.

For over 30 years, Flowers has been making both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay coming from the Sonoma Coast region. In 2009, Huneeus Vintners, the owners of Quintessa Vineyards in the Napa Valley, had bought a substantial interest in Flowers.

It was unusual for me to own a Flowers wine, as I said, I was not a big supporter of the wine, mostly since I was not much of a Pinot Noir drinker for many years. I do like Chardonnay and have sampled a couple of the Flowers Chardonnays, and have found them delightful.

Then one evening as I scoured my cellar for a wine to drink that evening, Salmon was on the menu, my eyes stopped when I came upon this Flowers Pinot Noir. I like Pinot Noir with Salmon and some solid 92+ reviews made me think “Why not!”

A perfect wine for the evening brought together with estate and sourced fruit from the Sonoma Coast, 10 months barrel aging in 100% French Oak with 18% being new oak, the wine opens with bright red cherry fruit and a savory aspect that rounds it out so well for drinking with the Salmon I prepared.

If you’re looking to enjoy “Flowers in December,” then I might suggest you take a look at Flowers Vineyards and Winery.

    Cheers
