July 23, 2020 - Deep garnet, mature black fruit mixed with a little must on the first nose, followed by rose, violet and grilled meats, soft on the attack followed by layered red and black fruit, spice, mild tannins, juicy acidity and with strong grilled meat flavors, finished long but a little thin with raspberry fruit, tar, earth, subtle spice and lingering powdered red cherry

Note: Btl #7542, from the other TNs, guessing it may be an off bottle, although I've owned this since its release, it just seemed a little "unfresh," pinning my hopes on the other bottles

June 28, 2020 - The 2004 Produttori Riservas: Asili wins by a nose (Magnum Society, Wellington, New Zealand): Served single blind, this Cru could only have been the Montestefano. The deepest, most primary ruby colour of the seven Cru. Serralunga-like. Aromatic, floral complexity on the nose. A generous and expressive, powerful bouquet of mainly black fruit. In the mouth, serious fruit volume, power and concentration. Plush black fruit with iron and chalky minerals at its core. Quite unresolved. It finished very long on its fine grained tannins. A group of tasters thought the wine over-ripe and evolved, which - I assumed - must have been the result of a defective bottle. Another group of Barolo aficionados had this Cru as their favourite. I was somewhere in the middle. The Montestefano needs serious time (say, 5-10 more years). My rating 4/7, group rating 5/7.

April 7, 2020 - Beautiful nose with layers of dark berries, violets, cherries, and a hint of cedar. Finely grained tannins adding structure and grip on the palate followed by intense flavors of dark berries, dark cherries, and lingering sweet spices. Long finish. Wow, I’m very impressed by this wine. I love the 2004 vintage in Barolo & Barbaresco and this is a fantastic example.

May 14, 2019 - PnP. Consumed over two nights. Mid+ body, mid acid, 14%. Mature but far from fading.

September 21, 2018 - Three Produttori Montestefanos: The best of the three Montestefanos. An interesting bouquet, fresher and more red fruited. Aromas of red cherries, raspberries, rose florals and lavender and other dried herbs. Also a touch of tar. In the mouth, noticeably less ripe, more savoury, than the other two Barbarescos. A hint of minty green. Sour cherry, cigar, tar, earth, porcini and sottobosco. The tannins were nicely integrated. Good definition, the 2004 seemingly with the highest acidity of the three. A long, dry finish. Better on the second evening, more evolved and secondary. At the start of a long drinking window.
