December 2, 2018 - Cork totally disintegrated upon opening, so resorted to coffee filter (as did LS below). Annoying. Feared wine may be corked, but that was not the case. Excellent port-like wine - - will evaluate over the next few nights.

October 27, 2017 - Medium to dark garnet core. Raisin, iron, molasses, tobacco leaf, and quite a bit of alcohol on the nose. Off-dry -- not nearly as sweet as port, but with a fair amount of residual sugar. Full-bodied, bold, with a palate nicely mirroring the nose. While I do not generally think of Grenache as aging well, this clearly has. Reminds me on some levels of the best qualities of mature vintage port, but with less sweetness. Loads of subtle complexity (celery seed, tobacco, and dark chocolate covered espresso beans). Very long length. While the wine still has a slight tannic bite on the finish, it actually balances out the sweetness and alcohol very nicely. It's hard to imagine this getting much better, though it's very hard to tell with such an idiosyncratic wine. Wow.

December 11, 2016 - Cotat, Jermann, Bonneau, Janasse, Giacosa, Rampolla, Clos Mimi (Downtown Akron): A blast from the past. The cork totally disintegrated on opening. The wine was strained thru a coffee filter and back into the bottle. This has always been an interesting wine. Tim Spear's hommage. IIRC, Tim gave this a very long barrel ageing. It drinks like a thin port or better a Banyuls. Its good. 18.5% Alcohol and not fortified. Purple in color. The nose has dark cherries, slight sugary note on the nose. On the palate, dark cherries, slight chocolate. Its dry although it has the feel that it would be sweet. no heat. A fun bottle. No idea where this might be on the ageing curve.

November 21, 2010 - Dujac, Conterno, Casa Piena, Realm, SQN, Saxum (WSWOTY), Clos Mimi (Dante's): So, speaking of hype, I really enjoyed Tim Spears two part interview with Gary V. on WLTV, so I thought I would throw one of his wines into the mix. This is a Grenache dessert wine, 18.5% and not fortified. Not quite dry, but just a hint of sweetness. It went superbly with the Brownie dessert. Ruby in color. The nose has a chocolate covered raspberry quality. On the palate, this is lush and thick and while there is some heat, it is not bad (far less than say a good vintage port). This plays out more like a Banyuls, but I really liked it. It was popped and poured, but I suspect that some air would really help it out. Very nice!

February 18, 2009 - Served with a desert of chilled peanut butter and chocolate squares. We appreciated this wine for its overall quality, but it is a bit too raisin-y and sherry-like to become one of our favorites or warrant purchasing a second bottle.
