October 9, 2023 - Slight petrol and funk on the nose. Slightly flabby and not quite as dry as i had expected, quite fruity.

June 12, 2023 - Another long, cool woman in a black dress offering from Frau Fricke the Fabulous. From a cooler, naughtier vintage than its immediate predecessors, this is a bit slinkier and more lithe - it moves with poise and some elegance, whilst still delivering those pungent tropical fruits, this time with some lime blossom scent. The mouthfeel remains a sinewy, yet rich thing, hinting at voluptuous.

Depending on your preferences you may favour this over recent, more buxom years. I am marking it down for being just a touch shorter on the finish than I consider is required for an 'Outstanding' rating and there is a slight drop off in intensity after the initial rush. Be clear, we are talking fine margins here, not a wine that collapses. Another taster might feel I am being far too tough.

These types of wine have destroyed my ability to really enjoy Australian Riesling the way I used to and it is not really fair, because Oz Rieslings remain wonderful beasts, but they inhabit a different space and lack the sensuality and layering that makers like Eva Fricke achieve.

I keep finding myself marveling at the value of German Riesling. I love Chardonnay/White Burgundy, but I think German Riesling delivers all the raw sex appeal of great Chardonnay with something more. The prices you will pay for the things that excite in great Chardonnay/White Burg you will get in German Rieslings at a fraction of the price. This is wonderful drinking. I am drinking this and thinking of Neil Diamond's 'Cherry, Cherry' or Cat Steven's 'Here Comes My Baby' because there is something that is pure fun and so catchy about this wine, but my mind is turning to that most alluring and vocally interesting singer, Mary Travers; she 'embodies' (pardon the pun) this wine - so much presence, dignity and raw sex appeal, combined with an arresting voice. Like this wine, all one can think of is female perfection.
