June 25, 2023 - Black cherries and blackberries on the nose, along with some cedar, graphite, and a hint of tobacco leaves. Palate starts off with the black cherries, then leads to vanilla and tobacco before finishing with a slight herbal note. The tannins are soft but present, the acidity is medium and balances out the fruit and oak nicely. The finish is medium in length.

Overall, a balanced, tasty, and great value Cabernet Sauvignon. Some people claim that Cabernet from Alexander valley is closer in style to Bordeaux than to Cabernet from their neighbors in Napa, and I can see how that might be true. I compared this Frei Brothers Cab to the 2019 Beaulieu Vinyard Napa Valley Cabernet in a "value California Cabernet" comparison. I slightly preferred the Alexander Valley wine to the Napa one, and given that the Frei Brothers is slightly cheaper, I like it better still.

March 22, 2023 - Open nose of red and black currant fruit with sweet spice accents. Easy and accessible palate with satisfying flavours; good length, warming finish.
