February 24, 2018 - A journey through Martin Müllen's Riesling wonderland (Diergardts "Kühler Grund", Hattingen, Germany): The grapes for this Hühnerberg Spätlese were harvested in November. Martin mentioned, that the fruit came from the first and second Terrace (like Dirk mentioned, the third terrace was added to the Müllen vineyard portfolio in 2005). Smoky, flinty nose mixed with yellow plums, stone and spices. On the palate very precise, acidity is wonderful interwoven although I expected a little more "kick". Good length with a salty finish. And still such a FRESH wine. Nearly no sign of aging. A very pure interpretation of Riesling from one of my favourite vintages of the last decade. Drinks pretty nice now, although I think there is no need to hurry.

February 24, 2018 - A journey through Martin Müllen's Riesling wonderland (Diergardts Kühler Grund, Hattingen, Germany): Harvested in November, still without the 3rd terrace, that started from 2005 onwards. Pale golden yellow color. Developing nose with only a few notes of maturity. Ripe fruit, fine, elegant notes of slate, spiciness and depth.
Dry. High, ripe and perfectly integrated acidity. Very fresh, almost no signs of ageing. High extract, lots of tension and depth. Very fresh, salty, fine and elegant. Long finish. Has decades ahead. 92-93+

October 14, 2017 - The German Crush Tour; 10/8/2017-10/16/2017: Elegant and bright, a well structured spatlese showing red berry and stone fruit. long bright finish. lovely wine just entering early maturity. i would give it a bit more time.

October 6, 2017 - Sticky cork but bright and lively wine. Rounded medium density with some pencil lead behind the orange peel. Youthful, no rush.

    March 4, 2017 - 7,5% alcohol.

Pale, almost neutral greenish color. Fresh, but somewhat reticent nose with subtle aromas of citrus fruits, some ripe apple and a hint of smoke. The wine is refreshing, lively and mineral on the palate with medium-body and bright, focused and youthful flavors of steel, crisp lemony fruit, some tart green apple, a little bit of saline tang and a hint of lemon marmalade. Overall the wine is medium-dry to medium-sweet, but as the racy acidity offsets the sweetness so nicely, it is difficult to assess how sweet the wine actually is - it could be very sweet, yet the wine really doesn't taste like it. The finish is crisp, lively and long with youthful flavors of lemony citrus fruits, honey, some overripe apple and a hint of steely minerality. The residual sugar becomes slightly more noticeable in the aftertaste.

A bright, fresh and focused Riesling that is at the age of 16 years still very youthful and even surprisingly primary - there has been very little evolution here and overall the wine this comes across perhaps a bit one-dimensional for its age. However, there is tremendous balance and structure here, so I don't believe this wine is inherently simple, but only too young. I guess this is just one of those wines which are rather unaffected by the passage of time and which develop at a glacial pace. It might take couple decades more before this wine hits its plateau of maturity. For current enjoyment the wine is a bit too young and not that rewarding; my recommendation is not to touch this wine at least for the next 10 years. If you have something else in your cellar, open them instead. Expect this wine's rating to go up with age. Good value at 21,90€.
