December 11, 2022 - Sangiovese in purezza from the Frascati area. No added yeast, 4 days on the skins (only whole cluster), vinified in steel with no filtration or clarification, just a small dose of SO2 when bottled.
Tasted blind.
Just a tad hazy, pale intensity, garnet color.
Popped and poured and the nose just blossoms right away. Wild strawberry, bright red cherry, some flinty/cap gun smoke-like reduction, rose petals and sage.
Bordering on medium bodied with high acidity and light, very fine-grained tannins. Again lots of bright red berry-fruit along with some rose petals, rose hips, sage and a smokey note. Decent intensity and length.
It first struck me as a tasty, and juicy wine but given some attention there is also some complexity to this. I ended up calling this a light bodied Etna Rosso because of the red berry-fruit and smokey 'minerality' with Trousseau from Jura as a backup (because of the fruit and structure). I didn't even consider Sangiovese and this is quite atypical compared to the Sangiovese that hails from Tuscany or Emilia-Romagna. However, this is a lip-smackingly tasty wine with charm, personality and a lurking complexity that comes from the volcanic soils around Castelli Romani. Drinks like a charm right now and well worth the 13 euros paid!
