December 11, 2023 - tasted at the cantina with Paola. their second bottling of this wine. the juice used to go into the classico. one of the few traditionally made Baroli from Rocche dell Annunziata. nice aromatics on the nose combine with primary cherry fruit and spice to yield a very pretty wine in the early going. needs time in the cellar to come together but it's all here. great mouthfeel and a nice long finish. extremely curious to see how this comes together with time in the cellar........

October 11, 2023 - The '19 Rocche from Rinaldi initially screens as a very pretty, red fruited and floral wine, but behind that initial impression is an intense Barolo that will need a lot of time to come together. Compared to the '18, this wine is a bit more concentrated & complex, but more reticent and in need of time to develop.

Immediately after uncorking the bottle, sweet, hard candy-like red fruit & red floral tones emerged. In the glass, I also found smoke, mint, raw meat, and sweet spices alongside the core of very sweet, red florals and berry fruit.

On the palate, the expression is similar, with very pretty red fruit and floral tones leading the charge, with mint, iron, and fresh herbal tones behind them. The wine is medium in body, with medium acidity, with a lot of tannin emerging on the back end of the palate, showing the power and intensity of this wine which stands in contrast to the inviting aromatics.

August 4, 2023 - After a fantastic Friday evening with two crazy good wines together with great food, I also tested them on day 2 to see how they develop. I have to say that putting two wines against each other is incredibly rewarding in a meal, how two completely different wines can perform and go so well with the same food is awesome.

    Clonakilla Shiraz/Viognier 2019
Started very restrained, decanted for 2 hours before food. After another 1 - 2 hours the wine begins to bloom, it is now that you begin to understand why this is an iconic Shiraz from Australia. Clear tannins and a fine-tuned acidity lay the foundation for a very harmonious wine. Lovely blackberries, tart blueberries, black olives, a slight smokiness. This is so elegant, far from bombastic typical Shiraz wines, blindly I would have undoubtedly guessed a warmer vintage from the northern Rhone.
If this was good day 1, it's even better day 2, can't stop drinking, now everything is more homogeneous, silky tannins make this very pleasant. How good will this be in 5 - 10 years, crazy, for me one of the best wines of the year, 96 p.

Francesco Rinaldi & Figli Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata 2019
My first Barolo from this producer, got the same time in the carafe as the Clonakillan. Obviously young, but already the smell reveals how good this is, clear anise in the smell. But what tannins! Power and elegance in harmony, all typical nebbiolo notes are present. But there is a clear complexity here, layer upon layer. Despite its youth, the fruit manages to meet up and makes the wine fully enjoyable, but the feeling is that the wine needs more time, of course.
Day 2 this is so much better, everything is in place, these dry tannins are amazingly good, you understand how good this is going to be. Must be something special about this winery location, every wine I've had from here has been amazingly good, 95p.

Day 2 has given me all the info I need to understand that this will get even better with some time in the cellar, thankful that I have several bottles of both wines. So don't stress, let them sleep for a number of years...if you can :)
