March 29, 2023 - This wine is a heady, sultry, high-octane style of Syrah that came across to me as NorCal meets Rhone (and more Gigondas like than Côte-Rôtie). Over the past two nights tasting/drinking it with and w/out food, I've been oscillating between holding out reservations one moment and sort of falling in love with it (particularly the aromas) the next. I feel it's slightly opaque at this stage, and I can see why it was reserved by DL a year. This is probably going to blossom into a monstrously good wine, and I'm sure many will find it a crowd-pleaser now. My mentality around holding out and aging wine for the better future to come has changed through the years. I feel I'm more likely to love a wine that's amazing today come tomorrow than one that's not quite shining today. But that's not to say this isn't a shiny specimen -- you just might have to rub your shirt sleeve on the surface a bit to clear off the sludge. In many ways, this teeth staining, dense whole-cluster Syrah reminds me of the now Pax-owned Halcon vineyards and the "eponymic" wines it effused. High praise. I'm going to look forward to revisiting this in 3, 5, and 10 years. I think it will only improve.
