January 30, 2024 - Henschke Wines Tasting with Johann Henschke (WineHouse, Los Angeles): There is more spices here on the nose with cloves, vanilla and liquorice. Distant coconut as well. There is berry jam but also my favourite berry bush aroma. Oak twig. A little bit of barnyard, too surprisingly.
On the palate, it’s very young and showy. Full body but medium tannin. I get dried fruit now with prunes.
Chocolate with coffee and blackcurrants on the finish.

November 8, 2023 - Beautiful and juicy wine with beautiful black berries and a lot of fresh acidity, some mint, a touch of sweetness and round tannin. In fact a mouth full of beautiful, still very youthful wine. Will probably improve and show more finesse over the next decade. 94++

September 24, 2023 - Quite sharp. Nice sweet blackberry, blue berry and pepper. Also notes of bay leaf, herbaceous. A cool climate Syrah.
According to Johan Henschke this is a made from grapes grown in a marginal climate for Syrah.

August 11, 2023 - From the legendary Barossa vintage of 2018, and vines are from The Wheelwright vineyard dating back to 1968 planted by Cyrill Henschke (4th gen) at 500m elevation.

Lighter mouthfeel style in what was a big year for the region, with a raspberry and blueberry palate. Silky mid palate and acidity medium+ with grippy tannins, this is a wine for the long haul.

Matured in 21% new and 79% seasoned (65% French, 35% American) oak hogsheads for 18 months prior to blending and bottling.

I learnt that the Barossa Old Vine Charter, describes an ‘old vine’ as equal to or greater than 35 years of age.. this is certainly old! Recommended aging of up to 30 years in this exceptional vintage and wine.

2018 is especially meaningful as it marks 150 years of Henschke family winemaking. Proud to be able to pick up a signed bottle for a special collector too!
