Community Tasting Notes 2

May 25, 2008 - Rahsaan's farewell dinner (Cafe Rouge): A significantly darker yellow hue here compared to a bottle opened 5 months ago. Transparently mineral nose of sea shells and salty metal, but with a brassy oxidative character. Surprising intensity on the palate, with a big surge of golden fruit on the midpalate that carries through the finish. Long, complex finish with salty, savory, somewhat exotic golden fruit. This is softer and quite a bit more mature than a bottle tasted previously. And while the leftovers held up better than expected overnight, the last glass on day 3 was oxidized to the point of being undrinkable. Blind I would be in the Loire, thinking about Jasnieres or Saumur from a warm, yet dry (as in RS) vintage.

January 3, 2008 - Very pale gold in appearance. Mineral dominated nose of metal shavings, iodized salt, lemon zest, spice. Bone dry and tasting of spicy white/golden fruit and salty minerality, with impressive length and mouthwateringly high acidity. Salty and severe in a style that is just wonderful. Who knew aligote could be this good? Although i have not tasted de Villaine's version. From vines planted in 1902.
