April 5, 2024 - golden yellow and medium body. very lovely nose of fresh pineapple, melon, stonefruit and honeysuckle blossoms. silky in the mouth and of moderate acidity, there is a remarkable freshness to the white-fleshed fruit: layers of pear, white nectarine, and while melon are laced with green tea notes and pithy accents. very good length.

drinking well now and not for the long term… but a lovely, restrained and elegant expression of a varietal that can often be overexuberant.

13.7% AbV; 84% Viognier/ 11% Roussanne/ 5% Marsanne; sourced from Santa Barbara (60%) and Paso Robles (40%); barrel-fermented and aged on the lees with batonnage for five months, no malo.

January 6, 2024 - Loads of ripe, fresh fruit here, with cantaloupe and apricot leading the way. Floral notes and a skosh of baking spice weave in too. Round and unctuous, with just a hint of minerality to provide lift.

    September 14, 2023 - Wild Thing, I Think I Love You

But I wanna know for sure.

Now I know I do! You see I ran across this recent review of today’s wine (93 points) and, having recently reviewed a French Condrieu (Viognier), I couldn’t resist trying one from the States. Given its name, my reference to the Troggs song “Wild Thing,” was absolutely perfect.

Carol Shelton “Wild Thing” Viognier 2022

For anyone who has previously tasted this wine, there was a slight change for 2022. You see, the vineyard that Carol Shelton uses, Damiano Vineyard in Auburn, was hit with a late frost and destroyed the entire crop. This vintage is from the Central Coast region and is comprised of sustainably farmed vineyards from Paradise Vineyard Santa Barbara County (60%) and Paso Robles (40%).

The varietal composition consists of 84% Viognier, 11% Roussanne, and 5% Marsanne, all barrel-fermented with no malo fermentation to retain its crispness. It finishes aging in older French oak barrels.

While displaying slightly more fruit than its French counterpart I reviewed, this wine held its own. From the first sip, the wine brought forth beautiful layers of peach, pear, and citrus flavors along with a hint of ginger and almond. That crisp acidity rounded out the wine. It was a lovely wine for my dinner of fish, two times (meaning two types of fish), rice, and broccoli. Fresh Swordfish and Halibut

While recently released, with only a scant 838 cases produced, it may be a challenge to find this wine, but upon finding it, take advantage of it and scoop some up. I think you’ll be saying “Wild Thing, I think I love you” as well!

    Cheers

August 15, 2023 - Delicious! Such a fine wine, glides along, a satisfying imbibe.
Viognier is a difficult wine to make well, but Carol Shelton's talent and expertise comes through. This should be considered a benchmark for California Viognier.
