March 6, 2018 - Italian Wine Scholar at the Texas Wine School. Deep, dark ruby with some purple at the core. Unfiltered, very dark, thick and extracted. The nose is intense, with blackberry, purple flowers, balsamic, pencil shavings, graphite. The 12 months in new barrique and 12 months in large oak casks are noticeable but subtle. The nose is complex, youthful. The palate is dry, with fresh, sweet fruit, consistent wit the nose. The acidity is medium (+). The tannins are smooth and ripe, but still medium (+) to high. The alcohol is high at 14.5% but still very much in balance. This is a full-bodied, intense wine which is still remarkably youthful despite the 15 years of aging. 2003 was a record-breaking hot year in Italy, which might explain some of the ripeness and heft of this wine, but that would not explain its youthfulness and acidity. A remarkable wine which should continue to show well for 3-5 more years. One of the top 3 Pignolos I have ever had.
