March 21, 2024 - This is probably the first Lodi zin I’ve been gobsmacked by. Really luscious red and black fruit, the jammy is there but there’s also a rich undercurrent of fresh fruit too. Red and black cherries, pie cherries and fresh, subtle oaky baking spice, a whiff of cinnamon and cardamom, and a nuance of smoke in the finish. Really great opener to my first Bedrock allocation. Might have rated higher but was consumed with a 16 year old $300 barolo which is a tough act to follow, that said this zin held up against that bad boy which, I’m not sure says more about the barolo or this zine lol

February 24, 2024 - 2 hour decant. Nose of plum slices, creme de cassis and lavender. A dark, plummy palate that extends into a savory finish supported by a strong thread of mineral acidity.

This is a fresh drink that hits the spot, and shows well after a short decant. Definitely in a good spot to drink now.

January 6, 2024 - Been enjoying wine from this vineyard since the 2017 vintage although until 2021 it was blended with grapes from across the street at Kirschenmann vineyard into a bottling labeled Schmiedt Road. The wine seems to get better every year, defying any misconceptions about Lodi with its brightness and balance. As others have commented, this is drinking extremely well at this young age. Our third and last bottle will not see its 2nd birthday. Bring on the ‘23 Katushas!

December 28, 2023 - One of my new Bedrock favorites. Definitely top 5. "The early pour."

Except for occasional forays into Lodi, for example, Fields Family and Precedent Zinfandels (the latter sourced from Kirschenmann Vineyard which is across the street from Katushas Vineyard), I've sampled, but stayed away from regularly purchasing Lodi Zins. This is undoubtedly unfair to the Lodi appellation, but there are compelling Zinfandels produced in Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino, so I didn't have much reason to specifically seek out Lodi Zinfandels.

This is my first vintage of Katushas and this wine completely alters my perception of and valuation of Lodi Zinfandels. Delicious!

What's different? The quality of the vineyard and the wine-making craftsmanship of Morgan Twain-Peterson and Cody Rasmussen. My understanding is that Bedrock rejuvenated the vineyard with pruning, mixing 100 tons of compost and lime into the ten acres of soil to counteract years of nitrogen fertilizer and the subsequent decline in soil pH, and planting cover crops.

    What's the Result?
    Color: light purple
Taste: fresh, bright, gorgeous fruit with depth
Descriptors: makes me want to dance and shout Hallelujah! A joyous wine, a wine for celebration.

Points do not reflect the joy this wine provides. Not multi-dimensional or overly complex, so points are what they are, but man oh man, this is so good...

December 25, 2023 - On the nose- Bright red berries, red cherries, red raspberries, fresh blueberries, fresh strawberries, wild herbs, black pepper, cayenne pepper, pine, cedar, cigar box spice, brown sugar, wild red flowers.

On the palate- Bright red berries and red cherries, red raspberries and fresh blueberries, fresh strawberries and wild herbs, black pepper and cayenne pepper, cedar and cigar box spice, brown sugar and wild red flowers on the finish. This wine is drinking KILLER being super young and needs about 45min to really open up to show its stuff. I see this being able to age 10+ years with no real problem at all.
