Community Tasting Notes 23

December 9, 2012 - The wine is a fairly deep ruby color. The slightly reserved nose has blackberries, cherries, leather, dried herbs, tobacco, white pepper, earthy elements, and some dark chocolate. This has medium body at best with fully integrated tannins and very nice acidity. The wine is much more outgoing on the palate than the nose lead me to expect. The palate features solid cherry and dried herbs components with blackberry, white pepper, and a touch of earthiness adding considerable depth. This finish has decent length with peppery, spicy, cherries slowly giving way to a touch of dark chocolate. A very nice California Syrah that is approaching drink up time.

July 19, 2012 - Detailed and articulate Chalone Syrah that is compact and still delivers fine, robust tastes. Chewy red licorice, baking spice,
raspberry with pretty clove dotting the background. Soft tannins, but holds together well keep all the flavors at the forefront.
Hints of pipe tobacco drive the understated finish ending with notes of prune and dates. Past prime and was much better
earlier on in it's life. Drink now

December 22, 2009 - Think it was past its prime. However, still very quaffable. Very fresh fruit (strawberry, blueberry) on the nose, with a silky, medium finish with no tannins. Went well with a aged-medium bleu cheese. Overall, nice, but still think this guy is done.

January 9, 2009 - Odd but pleasant. Sort of a straw, coconut and sandalwood on the nose. A soft vanilla/wood joins the fruit on the palate in a way that reminds me a bit of the oxidization/maturity of an aged white burg...odd as that probably sounds. Not much in the way of syrah typicity for my tastes, but I enjoy it.
