February 9, 2024 - Getting up in years, but still enjoyable. Dark, plummy and roasted red fruits with solid acid. Glad I got to try a Pignolo.

June 9, 2020 - Aged for a year in barriques, followed by whopping 4 years of aging in oak botti casks, bottling and remaining in bottles for another year in bottles before release. 15% alcohol.

Brooding, dark-toned and basically fully opaque black cherry color with a hint of developed maroon hue. The nose feels robust and somewhat rustic with dry aromas of wizened black cherries, some vague meaty notes of cooked organs, a little bit of sweet blackcurrant marmalade, a developed hint of beef jerky and a touch of leather. The wine is very chewy, concentrated and rather full-bodied on the palate with intense flavors of sour cherries and herbal bitterness, some gamey meat, light smoky notes, a little bit of leather, light plummy tones, a hint of earth and a touch of wizened forest fruits. The overall feel is quite structured and moderately tightly-knit with the high acidity and ample, grippy tannins. The high alcohol lends some obvious warmth to the mouthfeel. The finish is dry, quite noticeably tannic and rather concentrated with intense flavors of sour cherry bitterness, some leather, a little bit of plummy dark fruit, light sweet notes of wizened dark berries, a hint of meaty umami and a tertiary touch of earthiness.

A very impressively structured, stern and powerful Friuli red with riveting depth and intensity. Manages to combine wonderfully ripe fruit notes with its more savory, developed characteristics and comes across surprisingly approachable and silky despite its quite formidable structure. Starting to hit its peak, but there might still be some room for further development. Very delicious, rewarding and immensely pleasurable. After having tasted some stunning Pignolo wines, I'm starting to be convinced this is The Red Grape Variety of Friuli. Terrific stuff, highly recommended.

October 1, 2017 - PnP; modest Shiraz-like vegetal bouquet. The palate however was something else to behold: bold, smokey rich fruit, tobacco, cocoa and what I can only describe as a caramelized anise note underlying a long finish - truly unique and outstanding.

April 24, 2017 - Double decanted, with a lot of aeration. Notes from day two. Deep garnet color and a bit cloudy. A reluctant nose of dark fruit and earth. Complex and rich dark fruit on the full-bodied palate with relatively low acids but considerable tannins. A substantial and impressive wine that may improve with further age and should still be drinking well at 20 years.

November 29, 2013 - Friday Night Double Blind Semi-Mondo $80+ (Bin 75): Intensely black core with browning rim; tobacco and dark fruit on the nose; tannic and brooding, dark fruit, not very expressive, very low acid; reminds me of Sagrantino that is harsh and unrelenting...which will not improve with age; its placement in the lineup hurt this showing but this was the overall consensus amongst the group.

(Moschioni Friuli Colli Orientali Pignolo) Opaque black red violet color; tobacco, charcoal, tart black fruit, tar nose; very tannic, tight, tart black fruit, charcoal, tar palate, reminiscent of a big Petite Sirah; long finish 92+ pts. (had been decanted for 3 1/2 hours; needs 6-8 years)

(PIGNOLO Moschioni) Pignolo Dear Friends, To put it mildly, this wine is insane. It must be experienced to be believed. If you think you’ve tried the biggest, blackest but still reserved, regal and full of class, you may need to re-orient yourself for this world-beating experience. I have no idea how long this will age but it was a highlight of my last pilgrimage to Europe and it makes so many of the highly rated wines of Italy seem like commercial fodder. An incredible wine with possibly 50 or more years of potential. 1959 Latour meets 1996 Malcolm meets 1985 Solaia?: This is one of the rarest wines in Italy - there is less of this than Miani Merlot. Put this in your First Growth blind tasting 20 years form now and watch the disbelief... EXTREMELY LIMITED - only 60 bottles for the entire US (1.2 bottles per state!) This parcel is directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance 2004 Moschioni Pignolo Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy8355
