December 25, 2012 - Eleven months later this is still holding up well. It's a good bottle, although maybe lacking a bit of length and depth.Still plenty of fruit, also some bittersweet notes and a nice smooth texture. A strange feeling of sweet yet dry. Never amazing but has been a pleasure to dip into every couple of months over the year.

    June 10, 2012 - Decant 4 hours:

Cork is a mess, showing seepage and the bottom half is very crumbly.

The wine is full of soft tannin, sweet fruit and sweet fruit in a pretty light frame, which seems to really help balance the berry, citrus and coffee notes. The finish is quite long, with a grand marnier-esque character. Delicious and in its prime.

January 24, 2010 - I found a very last bottle in the cellar, being misplaced with some other port. I haven’t tasted this one for several years. Light colour. More than a 10y tawny than a vintage port on the colour. Just a bit of fruit left, but still very smooth. Probably aged some years too much. Remember the previous bottles as better.

April 13, 2009 - A nice nose of red fruit, cloves and orange peel but that is the best thing about it. Correct but rather light flavour. Fully mature on this showing

December 2, 2003 - Medium garnet colour. Cherry, mint, bitter chocolate and cassis nose. Warming and balanced med-sweet palate; long elegant finish.

(Delaforce Vintage Port) The cork here behaved just as it did with my last bottle a few years ago, crumbling into a myriad pieces. Port tongs would have been the better option. In the glass this wine has really faded, and these last two bottles don’t reflect the potential I saw in one bottle many years ago. At the centre it has a tawny-toasty hue, with very little red pigment, and there is a wide and watery rim. The nose is gently spicy and aromatic, with soft sandalwood, baked figgy fruit, leather, earthiness and a little spirit. Attractive sweetness at the start, and this is maintained through the midpalate, but around that there swirls some firm alcohol. There is a pretty layer of leafy-earthy fruit as suggested by the more savoury aromatic tones, but the wine is still showing the bones of its structure underneath. With three data points now it is pretty clear that this wine is heading downhill and unlike some 1985s, which are still going strong, I would advise drinking this sooner rather than later.

(Delaforce Vintage Port) A terrible cork; crumbles under the screw and some Port tongs would have been very handy here. Good colour though, initially a little tawny but actually showing a bright, vibrant red under a good light. It has a lovely nose of sweet fruit and cinnamon, leather and cigars, and the palate follows up with similar finesse. There is considerable sweetness, a feature that marks the '85 Delaforce, but also a lovely rounded texture, with stylish porty blueberry fruit and a wood-smoke wedge. Great weight a concentration, but attractively balanced too. Should drink well for 10-15 years yet.
