December 10, 2023 - A little less reductive here relative to the other 2022 SVDs, but has an energy and tension that really stand out compared to every other site. Also a mineral note here and great elegance overall. 95pts

December 9, 2023 - 2022 Walter Scott test drive (zoom): The nose is fresh and expressive, filling the glass with meyer lemons, red apples, pears, creamed peaches, vanilla beans, some marshmallow, nougat, and yellow flowers. There is excellent depth and balance here that leans into the expressiveness. The Medium bodied feel is well balanced and poised with crisp, medium+ acidity that shows off a lot of mouthwatering qualities. This is a real stunner of a Chardonnay even at this young age. This still has room to improve and it really feels like it has all of the abilities to get there in 4+ years.

December 9, 2023 - Walter Scott 2022 Vintage Zoom Tasting: Less reduction than the Freedom and Justice chardonnays. Perfume-like nose, and on the palate a more typical Chardonnay profile, with citrus notes being the most prominent. Medium, integrated acid and a long finish. A lovely Chardonnay!

December 9, 2023 - Samples at the Walter Scott virtual release tasting for the 2022’s. I love that they do this—Ken and Erica are so authentic and passionate and really enjoy hearing all the geeky details.

As far as the tasting, of the 10 wines tasted I will only write one note. I am a huge WS fan and particularly obsessed with their Chards. I am sure their PN is excellent, but I am still trying to ‘figure out’ Oregon PN and not really qualified to comment. Besides, I was distracted by all the exceptional Chardonnay.

My two favorites of the tasting were x-novo and Sojeau. Since X-Novo is always a favorite, I’ll make a note on the Sojeau.

Like all of the wines we tasted, this had a fair bit of reduction. Matchstick, flint, gunpowder. This is a polarizing feature of their wines. I happen to seek it out. The samples this year had too much reduction even for me, but this may be due to the sample bottling. Normally I would let them blow off for awhile in the decanter, but we didn’t have time so drank as is.

The other disclaimer is that these are of the lean searing acidity style which is also polarizing and I also happen to love. I appreciate Ken saying unabashedly’we know not everyone likes this style, but we make wine the way we like it for the people who appreciate this style.’

In the Sojeau, the acidity is less noticable although still quite present. It is very balanced despite its embryonic state and very round and flavorful in the mouth. As Ken described, there is almost an essential oil attribute with citrus oil essence and texture.

You really can’t go wrong with any WS Chardonnay, but I will be putting the Sojeau in my online cart this year for sure.
