March 23, 2023 - Nose: coconut, apricot, herbs, gasoline, wasabi, sponge cake
Notes: an interesting and complex mix of aroma. Very well preserved wine with beautiful amber color. If I were to guess I would probably guess it's from the 60s rather than the 40s. The palate is perhaps a little more age revealing than the nose with a relatively light aftertaste.

July 17, 2022 - 16 Mature Bordeaux Magnums 1945/47/55/59 (+Unico): Three Sauternes (Barsacs), all from magnum. Clear winner and overall WOTN was a magical Climens from 1929 (98+ pts) which had it all: unbelievably complex, ever changing aroma profile with loads of sensual tertiary notes, high precision, sweetness and freshness in perfect harmony, as well as a light and airy structure and feel. The Climens 1953 (94 pts) showed at best like a 20 year old wine. Hardly any tertiary notes and lots of freshness. Impeccably structured, airy, but of course, not remotely as complex as the 1929. Could become a great Climens, though. The Coutet 1949 (89 pts) showed fairly complex and precise but instead of beautiful saffron botrytis it had some chemical notes.
TN: Medium expressive nose with some chemical notes, wet paper and underneath some quince. On the palate the wine is intense with nice fruit core of citrus, apple and quince. Sadly, also more bit chemical botrytis notes instead beautiful saffron ones. Even with more air and swirling that never changed. The acidity is high and keeps the wine light and cuts through the sweetness but is not perfectly integrated. 89/90 pts.
Decanting: Double decanted 3+ hours before the tasting. -

July 2, 2022 - Richter Magnum Rarity Tasting (Zunfthaus zur Waag, Zurich): Tasted at a grand magnum rarities tasting hosted by a merchant and collector in Zurich. Most bottles were Bordeaux from the 40s and 50s. The top 3 wines 1. Cheval Blanc 1955 (98), 2. Ausone 1959 (97), 3. Haut-Brion 1955 (95). Full list of wines sorted by score and additional observations included in the tasting story.
Tasting notes
Caramel and almonds, a fresh green herbal layer, freshly baked bread and herbal tea. The palate benefits from nice acidity providing freshness, but the aromatic intensity drops off quite significantly. -

July 2, 2022 - Annual Richter All-Magnum Extravaganza: Saffron, mirabels, caramel, burnt sugar, some puff pastry, unfortunately also a bit of a "plastic toy" botrytis note. Medium sweet, overall quite enjoyable

July 15, 2011 - Medium amber, citrus tinged light caramel flavors, with wonderful balance. Took a half hour to open in the decanter. Was the most successful wine with all the courses at dinner. Medium to long finish and kept developing in the glass.
