    March 22, 2024 - i David,

Do Ferreiro has long been a benchmark Albarino producer, leading the way in the region and championing the Albarino grape as a complex and age-worthy varietal. While the entry-level Albariño from the estate is superb and always has a place in my cellar, the Cepas Vellas is something truly remarkable. In my opinion, this wine should be on any serious wine enthusiast's bucket list. It is one of the iconic white wines of the world.

I vividly remember each and every bottle of Cepas Vellas that I've had the pleasure of drinking because each bottle is an experience. From a small 1.5ha parcel of vines planted on a sandy hillside in Salnès on the coast of northwest Spain, the origins of the vineyard used for Cepas Vellas dates back to 1785 (yes, you read that correctly), and thanks to the careful work of Gerardo Méndez, these same vines–now over two hundred years old– are still bearing fruit. The ancient vines and sandy soils combine to produce a magic unlike anything else. Cepas Vellas is richly concentrated, with a focused acidity, and a beautifully textured minerality, belonging in the same class as Grand Cru Burgundy and Grosses Gewächs Riesling.

Cepas Vellas is only produced in the most exceptional vintages and in tiny quantities. The grapes are harvested by hand, and sorted in the vineyard, ensuring only the very best grapes from these already low-yielding vines make the final cut. The winemaking process is minimal, allowing the brilliance of the vines to shine without anything impeding or hiding what is naturally incredible. Indigenous yeasts are used for fermentation (and have been long before it was trendy) and the wine ages on its lees for 11 months, enhancing the texture of the final wine. The resulting Cepas Vellas can be enjoyed young, but can age gracefully in a cellar for decades. This is not a wine to miss.

20201 Do Ferreiro Cepas Vellas Albariño, Rías Baixas $69.99 NET
"The famed Cepas Vellas Albariño from Do Ferreiro, one of Spain’s iconic white wines capable of long aging and improvement in bottle, is sourced from a single 1.5ha Albariño vineyard in front of the winery in the Salnés Valley, planted in 1785. The historic vines are pergola trained and pruned with the Cazenave-Marcon method. Considered by many to be the apex expression of Rías Baixas Albariño, Cepas Vellas now stands with the great white wines of the world. Properly cellared, Cepas Vellas is capable of improving for 10 to 20 years." Winemaker Notes

February 2, 2024 - I know this bottle has some fame about it. Caveat: this wine is very very young. That said, it just tastes so generically Albarino to me. I do not see how this is worth 35+ euros.

December 2, 2023 - Sopar Topik. Potencia, estructura. Ahora esta accesible pero en unos años sera una bomba.
