January 18, 2020 - Académie des Cinquante Saint-Emilion Tasting (Restaurant Bolenius *, Amsterdam, NL): Tasted twice blind. (1, wine 9) Very earthy, slightly pedestrian, clay? Lacks length, 89. (2) Sweet and sour style, lifted, vegetal, unknit, lovage, raw, unpleasant, 88. Two very different notes, but it is clear that there are problems here. I also refer to my 2014 note.

January 18, 2020 - The 2000 Figeac is a little bit quirky, showing lots of fragrant pencil notes, smoke, musk, and cherry. The character is terrific, but the nose lacks the requisite depth to mark it out as really special. The medium bodied, agile palate further reinforces the notion that these are for drinking now.

November 30, 2019 - Heavily criticized by Parker & Co in the early years this SE comes out nicely, although not top range. Medium bodied, well structured and balanced, dominated by mature red berries, liquorice, roast aromas and a herbal background this bottle can be had now and over the coming five years.

October 27, 2019 - Mixed reaction from the group. Some really loved it others felt it lacked a bit of substance and this seems reflected in the notes below. No doubt it is a Figeac in that it is more Left bank than Right. The nose is wonderful and enticing. The flavours are all there but it is lacking its usual lick of warmth. Let's see how it develops over the next few years

September 10, 2019 - This has really moved through the gears during the last 2 years, and is firmly in its drinking window. It is puzzling how the critics got this so wrong back in the day with some rating it in the low to mid 80s. The nose is deeply aromatic with mature dark fruits with green pepper and graphite, and without doubt is the best feature of the wine. It is displaying secondary characteristics on the palate and has great depth and balance, but I find the finish a little challenging with a tannic wall which I think will be a permanent element. All in all it is a highly enjoyable wine, which is ready to drink with a few hours in the decanter. 93+

(Château Figeac) Bricking dark red violet color; smoke, toast, roasted fruit nose; tasty, toast, tart cassis, elegant, gravel palate; long finish

(Chateau Figeac St Emilion) A very elegant nose, curranty, defined, stylish and rich, with a beautiful smoky, green peppercorn element to it alongside the crunchy dark fruit. The palate is surprisingly stark in terms of texture, not fleshy, but certainly full of character backed up by an appealing structure. Attractive iron and bloody meat flavours. This wine, although still showing a lot of structure, with good grip in the finish, already exhibits some very appealing and mature aromatic qualities, but there is more elegance and harmony due on the palate I think. The wise will leave this alone for a while yet...although it certainly gives pleasure now. An interloper in a Bordeaux 2005 tasting.
