April 6, 2022 - This needed a little more cellar time but it was clear the quality and structure. Subtle nose at this stage but more blue fruit on the palate with a intensity and concentration of the vineyard and maker coming through. Loved this!

January 5, 2016 - Another Casual Burgundy Dinner (Juno - Chicago IL): Completely consistent with prior notes from this wine and the wine it really is - Hubert Lignier 2001 Cdlr. More black vs red, lots and lots of spice. Perfect balance. A wine to enjoy now or through the next couple of decades.

April 1, 2015 - Morey-St Denis Grand Cru Dinner (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): Beautiful. I was bowled over the first time I tried this wine a year-and-a-half or so ago, but noted that it needed a bit more time in the bottle yet. It now seems to be in just about the right place. Uncorked a night ago and allowed to stand, it was absolutely singing when we got to it. This had a just incredible nose, with lush, melting aromas of red berries and sweet cherries and wafts of perfumy flowers backed up with little minerally, herby notes - absolutely seductive. It was gorgeous on the palate too – meltingly soft, yet juicy and pure and wonderfully precise, it was so delicious, with crystal clear flavours of dark cherries and berries lined by little bits of fruit peel, and then a nice stream of minerality leading into a long, gentle finish. This is crazy good right now. A great marriage of soft seductiveness with Clos de la Roche sinew and structure. So complete, so yummy – a sensual wine showing at the peak of its powers. It bested a very good bottle of 2001 Dujac Clos de la Roche on the same flight – and that is really saying something.

August 5, 2014 - Birthday Celebration (Paris Club - Chicago IL): Don't tell anybody but this is Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche. Like other bottles of that great wine, this is lush with fat fruit while also energetic. More black vs red fruit, nicely supported with slightly sweet baking spice. Very long and evolving. Open approximately an hour before serving, but not decanted.

November 6, 2013 - Two Clos to Call - Impromptu Mid-week Dinner at Cafe de HK (Cafe de HK, Balestier Road): This was a superb wine - about as feminine and seductive a bottle Clos de la Roche as I ever had. Opened 4 hours before serving, it had an absolutely knock-out nose when poured. It wooshed out of the glass with perfumy wafts of violets and blackberries and blue cherries and dark cherries anchored by a layer of earthy undergrowth, with tiny touches of herb and anise-like spice at the edges of the bouquet - Wow! Dark, seductive, absolutely alluring - an incredible bouquet. Like the nose, the palate just bursts into the mouth with wonderful tones of violets and plums and blackberries, all glowing with a beautiful purity. Wonderfully balanced and integrated, this showed both power and grace, both sweet fruit and fine structure, all laced with fine 2001 tannins and really fresh acidity. There was something still a bit primary about the fruit, but one barely noticed it given how seductively soft and voluptuous the wine was, and how it generously opened up with beautiful mouth filling expressions on the midpalate, and then with a lovely burst of Morey spice and a sneaky twist of orange peel at the finish. Very full, very complete, and absolutely yummy. It still needs a few years yet to drop its puppy fat and perhaps to take on more nuance and complexity, but wow, this is definitely starting to drink very beautifully indeed. 94+
