Community Tasting Notes 4

September 12, 2010 - Deep and I mean deep berry notes on the initial nose, almost a raspberry kirsch or maybe cassis , a little hot, a little earth with a faint metallic aspect. Rich and round in the mouth, with a slippery and seemingly low acid feel that drains to a hothouse finish, alcohol clashing with syrupy fruit. The long bitter finish seems almost devoid of tannins. . This tastes like an over-cranked grenache to me, though I assume it's made with local grapes, something I'll verify soon (some quick research suggests: trincadeira, aragonez, moreto and castelao). If you like opulent, fat 14% alcohol reds without finesse or breed, this might be an option. Drink with food and be happy you can get this kind of flavor for around $13, if that's what bloats your foat.

May 10, 2009 - Quite a good wine. Decent nose & consistent through the finish.

October 16, 2007 - A blend of 33% Aragonez (aka Tempranillo), 29% Trincadeira (aka Tinta Amarela), 12% Moreto (some experts believe this to be the same varietal as Blauer Portugieser from Germany), 11% Castelao (aka Periquita) and a few other local varietals. The color is a pale to medium ruby with an aromatic nose of raspberry, rhubarb pie, pomegranate and rosehip. This blend is dry, light to medium bodied, with lively acidity, weak but somewhat astringent tannins, and a medium finish. The wine is flavorful on the palate with cranberry, strawberry, bing cherry and dusty earth. A very fruity and juicy young red from southern Portugal with a very unique terroir. 3/5
