February 2, 2016 - Middling red at the rim - blackberries and slight cedar on the nose. Very muted and withdrawn when first opened, after two hours' air it put on weight in the decanter to become medium to full bodied with a glossy velvet mouthfeel, fresh with restrained fruit, tannins not yet fully resolved. Probably now approaching its peak, but should be OK for another 5 years or so if well stored.

December 11, 2013 - I like this much better than the btw i had 6 months ago. The nose is rather explosive with dark fruit, leather, a little manure, cocoa puffs, and Indian spices. In the mouth, it remains a bit hot and heavy on wood, but this is a nice drink on a cold Wednesday night. I see this really working with grilled sausage. Alas, I was suffering through a kale salad.

April 6, 2013 - Nothing wrong with this, but nothing special. Too much alcohol heat on the finish. Probably not a wine to seek out again.

February 24, 2013 - Decanted. Begins to open up after about 40 min.
Interesting nose; the roast beef nose is a bit overwhelming at first.
It continues to evolve. I'd say it's best after breathing for 2 hours.
Overall impression: Tannic; somewhat restraint, more earthy than expected. At this price I expected greater precision/balance.
Too tough for the duck. Might work well with meatballs.
Not very good on the second day.
According to the Wine Society, it was awarded a gold medal at the 2006 Decanter World Wine Awards.
Now 10 years old, this doesn't seem to have the balance to merit any award. While my initial impression was that the wine may benefit from cellaring for another year or two, I don't really see this having a bright future any more.

    May 4, 2012 - -- decanted immediately before tasting --
    -- tasted non-blind over approx. 5 hours--

NOSE: tart and juicy black cherry and red currant aromas; hints of minty cement and spice (oak?); with time, notes of roast beef jus and orange oil emerged; quite expressive.

BODY: purple-black-red color of medium-deep depth; medium-full bodied.

TASTE: non-descript purple/red fruits; hints of mint, tertiary fruit leather, smoke, and spice; moderate concentration of fruit; fruit comes across as a little roasted; drying tannin; a bit hollow on back of mid-palate; tastes young, but I worry the tannin will outlast the fruit; alcohol is not noticeable; could use more acidity. Drink now – 2017.

    B: 50, 45 13, 15, 7 = 90
