May 16, 2020 - Zoom blind tasting #4: Bordeaux (At home during circuit breaker): I did not like this early-on, when I tasted a few years after release. I must say it has improved over the years, but it still remains a rather underwhelming Lalande. It was by some distance the youngest tasting wine of the afternoon, and came across as a nicely plush, well-constructed Bordeaux, but with a rather adolescent awkwardness in the way it fell together. The nose was quite classic left-bank, with notes of cassis and dark berries, fresh cedar and some spice, and then just a curl of tea leaf, all this still tinged with a hint of new oak. On reflection, quite a typical for Lalande bouquet - something I did not pick-up when blind because of that overtly creamy new oak character. The palate seemed really young, and a touch tight, but there was a nice enough shape and slow to it, with plush tannins and nicely-integrated acidity framing smooth notes of cassis and dark berries, along with some of the green, leafy tones (again characteristic of Pichon-Lalande), and then a touch of sweet spice on the finish. There was a polished, rather creamy feel to this that made it seem quite modern, and a certain stubbornness in the material which detracted a bit from the character of the wine. This was certainly quite well-made though. I would lay it aside for 6-8 years to see where it goes.

April 4, 2020 - 2007 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande was
complex, perfumed and elegant. It could be an enjoyable and balanced wine, if the taster does not mind the obvious lack of structure and intensity. The maturing Pauillac was clear and medium ruby in colour with a deep garnet rim and traces of sediments. On the nose, leather, anise, dried blackberries and blackcurrants were up front, and with an hour in bottle, complexities of tobacco, earthy farmyard and violets developed. The mouthfeel was dry, medium-bodied, with medium-high level of acidity and medium level of supple tannin. Faint flavours of dried black fruits, iron-like minerality and Ceylon tea lingered in an elegant yet persistent finish. The blend consisted of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc.

The 2007 vintage in Bordeaux was marked by cool and damp summer, and grapes struggled to ripen, if not being affected by mildew. My wine friend was disappointed by the lack of intensity on the palate. Taking into account of the vintage characters, however, it was among the best 2007 Bordeaux wines I had tasted. There were examples with drying tannin, overwhelming oak and pungent herbaceousness, while 2007 Pichon Lalande was elegant and balanced.
