Community Tasting Notes 4

September 1, 2013 - I bought a couple of bottles of 1978 G.Roumier Chambolle-Musigny out of France recently and popped a bottle on Saturday night. It had a magnificent perfume of roses, freshly tilled earth and summer berries macerating in sugar. It was full, sweet and generous in the mouth, filling every crevice with sweet fruit tinged with savoury earth. It was lacy, built in the mouth and really fanned out at the finish. Length of flavour was superb. I think this probably had a fair bit of 1er Cru material in it back then but it is probably the best Village wine I have ever had.

January 18, 2012 - Roasted and warm nose, very '78 on the nose which is Really gorgeous. A bit thin and some acidity but still has really pretty fruit and good density. Good intensity, but far from profound.

June 22, 2011 - Still drinking well at 33 years old with good complexity and red berry characters but with only good (but not great) depth of flavour. A touch of sappiness on the palate (which I generally like) was not backed by the fruit depth I was expecting.

My MW friend said the wine was very representative of what it should have been. However, having paid big money for it, I was disappointed, given (a) the excellent maker and (b) the great year and (c) the excellent condition of the bottle. Sourced and drunk in Burgundy.

April 17, 2008 - Just OK. It shows more hollow and bony than the other '78s and certainly wouldn't have left much doubt about which was the village wine.
