Community Tasting Notes 4

December 15, 2017 - Great taste, odd balsamic type aroma that faded with time in the glass. On the taste side, this is still alive with tannins mostly resolved and fruit still present. Slightly off bottle? Paired well with steak frites with RI mushroom bordelaise.

January 13, 2016 - Mostly 1966 Bordeaux and other surprises (Ripple Restaurant in Washington D.C.): Was this the first bottle of 1960s era Napa Valley wine I have ever had? I do not recall having such an old wine, so my experience here is extremely limited. David brought this bottle since he did not have any Bordeaux 1966 handy... And it was just delicious. I mean, it had a very ripe fruit aspect, blackberry and plum jam going on. Some of our group suggested Petit Syrah in the blend and I have not a clue. It was definitely more youthful than the Margaux 1966 tasted along with it, and for many drinkers a better wine. I give it a rather high score because of this youthful aspect, but there was something a bit monolithic about it, too. It did not have the complexity or nuance of either the Ducru Beaucaillou or the Pichon Baron. But the density and fruit was there. Nice job!

January 12, 2016 - 66 Bordeaux dinner (Ripple Restaurant in DC): This may have been Santa Cruz bottling but not sure. Intense slightly dry sweet black fruits, dark caramel, leather, cedar, licorice, mint and earth. Exceptional concentration, intense sweet black fruit driven palate impression, still noticeable slightly dry tannins and medium to short finish as it abruptly clips. There was a fascinating story of Martin Ray which I can’t locate. This used to be the most expensive California cab. Despite the generous fruit, it is not terribly complex. It is like old freemark abbey petite sirah, ie it is almost indestructible but don’t improve much with cellaring.

May 28, 2010 - Crappy Old Wines (Nazca Peruvian Restaurant, San Jose): Stinky, leathery nose. Like old shoes. Still got fruit - black cherry, cranberry, earth, lots of leather, and cedar
