May 26, 2019 - Nice mature nose displaying warm black fruit, green pepper, lead pencil, cedar and a hint of scorched earth. Fully mature palate, warm and round black fruit, medium acidity, slightly coarse tannins and a medium long black fruit driven finish with a hint of bell pepper and scorched earth at the end. Pretty consistent showing as the last bottle.

March 18, 2019 - Ideally cellared example. Medium expressive nose displaying ripe black fruit, a hint of green/vegetal, strong lead pencil, cedar and earth. Very good concentration, black fruit, good acidity, slightly coarse tannins and a medium to long finish. This reminds me a bit of old school mid-tier Napa cab. I prefer the 92 which has greater concentration.

May 21, 2017 - Dark chocolate bar prominent in the nose and palate, with bittersweet dark notes everywhere. Fruit holding up, but a bit soft, with dusty tannins surrounding. Earthy finish and slightly low acidity. Probably seen better days but still showing plenty of interest. Drink up.

February 27, 2017 - A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%) and Aglianico (10%). Fermented and macerated for three and half weeks in stainless steel. Aged for 12 months in new French barriques. Alcohol 12,5%, acidity 5 g/l, pH 3,7. Total production 5000 bottles.
Moderately translucent, dark ruby red color with moderately developed mahogany hue. Very rich, complex and somewhat dusty nose with mature, beguiling aromas reminding me much of aged Bordeaux with notes of wizened blackcurrants, dried dark cherries, some pencil shavings, a hint of sous-bois and a touch of tar. Although the nose feels pretty aged, it is still fully alive with pretty impressive intensity. The wine feels silky smooth, moderately full-bodied and harmonious on the palate with a structure that feels softened by the age, yet showing great balance with moderately high acidity and very ample yet very round and mellow tannins that contribute more to the chewy texture of the wine rather than to the structure. There are developed flavors of wizened blackcurrants, ripe dark damsons, some pencil shavings, a little bit of leather, lots of earthy nuances of a matured wine and a touch of tarry smoke. The finish is complex and remarkably persistent with developed flavors of dried dark berries, some leather, a little bit of sweet pipe tobacco, a hint of rich blackcurrant marmalade and a touch of developed pruney fruit.
A stunningly complex and enormously enjoyable vintage of Montevetrano. There is very little - if any - development to be had here, but most likely the wine will still keep good for years to come, if kept in optimal conditions. In a Montevetrano vertical of wines from 2004 to 1994, this one felt by far the most like an aged Bordeaux and I'm pretty sure it would fool many people if put as a ringer in a blind tasting of 1990's Bordeaux wines. Based on tasting all these vintages, Montevetranos seem to hit their peak somewhere around 15 to 20 years of age, depending on the vintage, and if they have been kept in optimal conditions, I have no idea how long they will keep, as most of the wines seemed to show no signs of falling apart. This vintage was IMO the best one in our vertical tasting and also one of the best non-French Bordeaux blends I've tasted.3 people found this helpful Comment -

February 8, 2017 - Butter tones on the nose, at first somewhat one dimensional but this one too opens in the glass, gets better and develops Bordeaux-type flavours, pencil shavings. Good.
