Community Tasting Notes 5

December 2, 2019 - NobleRottersSydney - older whites (360 Bar & Dining, Sydney): {screwcap, 12.5%} [Graeme] Mid-yellow, with a developing nose of caramel and wax. Similar palate, with some butterscotch flavours, but always dry and in a neutral, non-intense way. Seems to have medium acidity, but still remains woolly and thick on the medium/full-bodied palate; finish sits a bit towards the front of the tongue. Nice enough effort for such a cheap wine, but wouldn’t wine the grape many friends among the uninitiated. Can age further; doubt there’s more depth or complexity to be had though.

November 4, 2018 - This bottle much better than the last bottle a few months back that was weirdly flawed, maybe faulty screwcap?
Textbook aged Marsanne flavours of honeysuckle, lime cheesecake, the juice at the bottom of a fruit salad.
Some flinty Smokey notes persist from beginning to end which are strange but pleasant and add to its complexity, which it seems to need.
Given the release price and the secondary market value however it’s outstanding value and a pleasure to drink, and age has really changed this wine for the better.

July 24, 2014 - Well...11 years old and pretty fresh still. What sensational value tahbilk's standard wines are. This marsanne is magic with a chocolate brownie for some reason. Love the nose...worth the money for that alone.

December 6, 2013 - Honey-lemon nose. Smooth palate, with steeliness balanced by a hint of sweetness.

June 15, 2011 - {screwcap, 12.5%} Quite a deep yellow colour. The nose is has a lanolin, slightly sweaty aroma about it; initially tinged with rubbery reductive characters which graduallly blow off in such a way that I never quite know whether they're gone. Hmmm. The palate is dry, but with honeysuckle and marzipan-type flavours, a touch of that lemon, and still-persistent acid which keeps the wine fairly fresh, despite the generally developed nature of the flavours. It's around medium-bodied; interesting to taste a wine with a relatively dense texture but with no signs of oak maturity at all (this wine sees none, of course). As it sits in the glass there's a grapefruit tinge to the flavour; it's quite even in its presence on the palate, although the finish isn't longer than 'medium length'. Slight concern about the reduction notwithstanding, I'd be happy to give this another 5 years in the cellar at least; Tahbilk's own cellaring recommendations have the 96-99 vintages at peak drinking, I see no reason to dispute that timeline when it comes to the 03.
