February 14, 2023 - Bright purple, would guess a 5yo wine if blind.
Incredibly fresh. Has more weight than the average Vat 9, along the lines of the 2014. By no means overdone though. Seamless, soft and incredible length. Really not showing many secondary characters as yet, still vibrant fruit and took a good 5 hours to really open up. Delicious, drinking very nicely and I suspect will be a very long term proposition. Another 15 years under stelvin should be no issue. Only one left unfortunately, will wait until at least its 20th birthday.

January 28, 2023 - I opened this at a party and hence did not take any formal notes. However, the 2007 Vat 9 is still very young, with great fruit intensity and yet medium-bodied, and well-balanced structural elements. This was tasted blind, with most tasters guessing that this was 2014. A heroic Hunter red for the long haul, keep hands off this as long as possible…another 10+ years?

August 1, 2022 - Remarkably, tasted young. I would have said 5 years old hence I get the 2014 comment of another taster. Still purple robed. Unripe berry nose with coffee nuance and a sawdust hint. Medium bodied, good acid draw, that unripe berry/fruit note again that persists on to the finish. I just think this will fully unwind in another 5 years or so. I think it is a 20-30 year wine - ironically one that may have benefited from being under a sound cork so I didn't have to wait so damn long!

February 23, 2021 - Tyrrell's Vat 9 Vertical: In a 6 vintage vertical spanning 2000 to 2013, the 2007 Vat 9 astounded on many fronts. An opaque dark ruby, the 2007 looked younger than the 2013, leading some to suggest perhaps it was the vaunted 2014. Powerful nose of blue and dark fruits and spices; enormous fruit depth with notes of both red and dark fruits, such length, a balanced acid draw, and still some firm grip. Still tightly wounded after 14 years and under screwcap, would look to leave this for another 5-10 years to reach peak.

September 5, 2020 - 2007 was an early vintage and Tyrrells say the fruit came from vineyards on the Ashman’s property with an average vine age of 50 years. (Predominately from the Weinkeller and Short Flat vineyards). From memory, Vat 9 is aged in foudres, with 30% of them new.

13 years old and still purple in colour. Some spice on the nose, with blueberry and red fruit followed by darker fruit flavours. Fine tannins. Hasn’t developed any saddle characteristics. Still youthful. Lovely finish and length. No hurry here.
