Community Tasting Notes 5

October 31, 2018 - Pale gold. A moderately restrained nose of floral lemon rind - Meyer lemon maybe - and some green herbacious notes. The palate has nice density of smooth lemon fruit, bright and focused acidity, and a long finish of grippy minerality and lemon curd. This is still quite young and probably has another 5 years before it starts to enter maturity. A very nice wine in a restrained, elegant style.

January 3, 2016 - Still pale silvery yellow in the glass. The lime, green apple, and herbal aromas typical for Merkelbach's Würzgarten bottlings come through here bright and clear, and the palate is a delicate expression of Mosel Riesling: gentle fruit lifted by acidity that supports the whole without asserting itself with any noticeable tang. Excellent example of a lighter style, and a pure pleasure to drink.

June 19, 2010 - I'm with jlm on this one. Not sure if this is in an extended dumb phase or if I was overly optimistic in 08, but this was disappointing. It lacked presence and energy. The finish was still interesting, but I have higher expectations for the wines from this producer.

July 2, 2009 - I am a big Merkelbach fan and I was disappointed in this bottle. The nose was very reticent, but did yield some light and nondescript citrus aromas. The palate was simple, fruity, and lacking in any acidic energy. Shutting down? Off bottle? Who knows, but I expected a much better showing.

December 28, 2008 - Abundant baby fat but hints of some potential. Orchard fruit and Wurtzgarten strawberries on the nose, with a few hints of damp slate. It's hard to get past the honeyed sweetness on the palate at this point, but there's nice mandarin acid, apple flavors and some light minerality. The finish is like licking honey off a rock. In a decade this could be exceptional.
