Community Tasting Notes 21

April 2, 2014 - Better than when I had this 4 years ago. Rich, butter cream, lemon and still some acidity. Toasty quality from 4 years ago has worked its way into this wine. Nice.

February 9, 2013 - Medium gold. Attractive nose of citrus, smoky oak. Still some power on palate, but also a hint of premox. Drink now or over next 18 months.

July 28, 2012 - Pop/pour. Short notes, in that the oxidization of this bottle overwhelms any other more nuanced notes. It doesn't quite approach the level of premox, but it's close. I have more tolerance to oxidization than my wife does, so I could drink this, she could not. Much further along in development than I would've expected based on prior bottles. I'm hoping to write this one off to bottle variation. Update: with 30 minutes of air, this comes into a better balance, with more obvious fruit and even a bit of acidity showing itself. Still more advanced than I would expect. 88 points after 30 minutes, with the caveat that I don't mind a bit of oxidized character.

February 23, 2012 - More overtly "Burgundian" with more overt acidity than the frozen bottle from a month ago. Quite young. A bottle like this has a lot of life in front of it.

January 16, 2012 - Ooops. Put in the freezer to quick cool, forgot about it, recovered the cork-exploded bottle the next day. Nevertheless, this bottle performed well the following day, and much better than the bottle I had almost 5 years ago. The nose seems influenced by oak and butter, an impression that carries to the palate. On balance, this seems like a modern-styled chardonnay, a well-behaved Napa or Sonoma chard. I probably wouldn't pick this out as a Burgundy in a blind tasting, but nevertheless I like it. On closer review, and knowing what's on the label, I do get a sense of minerality and a sense of balance that's uncommon among most California offerings.
