May 2, 2024 - This was opened and decanted with some trepidation given a number of CT tasting notes that were less than stellar for a first growth from a so-so vintage. I was pleasantly surprised by unfolded.
Given the wine's age and potential fragility, I did not give this wine extended time in the decanter before beginning to drink. For the technical geeks out there, I even wrapped the top of the decanter in plastic wrap to limit the amount of air exposure for the thirty minutes preceding our sit down to dinner.
Very little sediment. Deep red color with little to no signs of age on the edges. The nose was subdued with berry, leather and faint hints of wood. I suppose it was a bit thin in the mouth but not a distraction to one's enjoyment. Clean with no discernible flaws. A long finish without alcohol abrasion. A wine to leisurely enjoy with dinner.
In a blind tasting, I doubt I would identify this as a Margaux. For your dollar, there are countless, less expensive wines that will bring equivalent sensory enjoyment. That said, how often do you have a chance to drink a 30 year old bottle that has been cradled in your cellar for most of those 30 years? That is the pleasure of this wine which more than compensates for the shortcomings of a weak vintage. -

November 2, 2023 - Tasted blind. Grippy, stalky, clearly a wine from a high quality terroir but from a lesser year, clear and precise, dry Cabernet, crisp and tight, very good length.

November 2, 2023 - No decant but gave it plenty of time in the glass and bottle. Wine showed glimmers of greatness but really lacked in all departments and certainly a poor reflection of 1st grown Bordeaux. The bottle itself seemed in good shape, just not up for a good time. Quite light and thin for a first growth and in terms of value for money it's a poor buy. Would not recommend.

October 13, 2023 - (BYO Blind tasting)
Full, rich and elegant nose. Black currant and oak. Bell pepper and smoky gravel. Very minerally. Tertiary notes of sweet tobacco. Lovely, lovely and classic nose. Margaux perfume.
Medium-fullish palate. Very balanced and with good concentration. Smoke, cedar and bell pepper. Just slightly weak. The taste is not as fantastic as the nose and reveals the weaker vintage. But impeccable class.
I think the greeness will only increase with further cellaring, so I would not hold on to this, but of course it will last for many years. -
