April 28, 2023 - Rioja bottle opened in Spanish style, without decanting, serving as an aperitif from a good time before lunch, letting the wine breathe slowly in the glass for three hours. Impolute low quality cork. Bright cardinal colour with a dark core and orange edges. Initially the nose is invaded by notes of old chewing tobacco, cherries with a stroke of dampness that dissipates with time, also rosemary bush, tanned leather or spicy cookies. No finesse, just naked complexity. On the palate shows a rustic silky texture, I mean that not being the most elegant but it is tasty enough, pretty acidic and quite long. Wood and alcohol perfectly integrated. In a sense, a powerful GR certainly reinforced by the action of this vintage. Certainly there is deep here. Low sediments level.
Although it is well known that this extraordinary harvest has a very long life ahead, I must confess that the bottles of Rioja 2001 are getting very cool at all levels.98's too. It certainly takes a lot of daring right now to rate this bottle below 90.

August 1, 2014 - It needs 30-60 minutes to open.

August 25, 2012 - Ruby colour. Traditional Rioja nose, some tobacco notes, smoky, a touch lifted.
In the mouth it is medium bodied. Tart and astringent on the palate. Finishes pretty short with a sour note.
There are interesting traditional rioja aspects to this but I find it too tart to derive much drinking pleasure from it.
This winery made some lovely wines in the 60's and 70's, I have no idea if this will resemble them in the future.

May 18, 2011 - Vintage Select Industry Tasting (Vintage Select Warehouse, Houston, TX): Classic nose, strawberry, leather, spice, orange peel, cherry. On the palate, red fruit, orange peel, spice. Finishes with nice tannins and balance. Needs a lot more time but has the raw material. Outstanding.

April 28, 2010 - Inconsistent notes 80-88 Pkte., its a wine for traditional Rioja lovers, some thinks the wine is allready old Otti who knows Conde says - good for the next 15 Jears.
(Marc)
